His Eminence Cardinal Daniel DiNardo
There's something special about His Eminence Cardinal DiNardo who is one of the most important American Catholic leaders today.
Born in Ohio to Nicholas and Jane DiNardo, it was in Pennsylvania where Cardinal began his studies toward the priesthood. He was ordained in July of 1977 into the Diocese of Pittsburgh and later undertook further studies in Rome. It was there that he worked for the Congregation for Bishops from 1984-1991 and taught at the Pontifical North American College. He then returned to Pittsburgh to be a parish priest. In 1994, the Bishop of Pittsburgh charged him with founding an entirely new parish. Building a parish from the ground up taught DiNardo a valuable lesson in the unifying force of a common Catholic faith.
In August of 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Sioux City. He was consecrated in October of that same year by Bishop Soens, the Bishop of Sioux City. A year later he assumed full governance of the diocese.
In January of 2004, he was named Coadjutor Bishop of Galveston-Houston. When the diocese became an archdiocese in 2004, DiNardo was promoted to the rank of Archbishop. In February of 2006, he assumed full governance of the very diverse Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, where Mass is celebrated in 18 different languages.
Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to Cardinal in November of 2007. He is the first Roman Catholic Archbishop in Texas to be elevated to the College of Cardinals and is one of its youngest members.
Cardinal DiNardo has a twin sister who lives in Katy, an older brother and a younger sister. |
